The first in M.R. Carey’s post-apocalyptic trilogy, The Book of Koli, paints a grim future where — similar to Day of the Triffids — the plants have taken over. Set somewhere in England, the country has been reduced to small village communities struggling to keep genetically enhanced trees and plant life at bay. During theContinue reading “The Book of Koli (Rampart Trilogy #1) by M.R. Carey Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

The Last Duel by Eric Jager. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️
An interesting account of the last sanctioned duel in 14th century France between two former friends. It’s just a pity the author chose to tell this tale via facts and information as opposed to using the intriguing events to fashion a great historical fiction novel. This is merely a personal opinion. It takes nothing awayContinue reading “The Last Duel by Eric Jager. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️”
Wolf Hall (Thomas Cromwell #1) by Hilary Mantel. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Like many who’ve pointed out on their own reviews, one of the major things to bear in mind is that this novel takes place in the head of Thomas Cromwell. It certainly helps when the word ‘he’ is thrown about like it’s going out of fashion. Hilary Mantel takes a controlled and measured pace withContinue reading “Wolf Hall (Thomas Cromwell #1) by Hilary Mantel. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
Duke (Leopards of Normandy #2) by David Churchill. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An absolutely superb second instalment of the Leopards of Normandy trilogy, by David Churchill. It starts directly after the events which drew a close to its predecessor, Devil. Bouncing between Normandy, England, Flanders, & Paris (or thereabouts), Churchill does a fantastic job of keeping the reader engrossed in each regions’ power struggles, subtly hinting atContinue reading “Duke (Leopards of Normandy #2) by David Churchill. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think for at least the first half of this book it should be referred to as “The Doomsday Phonebook” as a fair chunk of it has its characters constantly ringing each other up. I found the idea of a university history dept having the ability to time travel and study their subject firsthand absolutelyContinue reading “Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️”
Kingdom Come (Kingmaker #4) by Toby Clements: Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An absolutely superb end to an enthralling series. One of the best historical fiction series set during the wars of the roses I’ve ever read. Clements does well (throughout the series) to keep his fictional characters at the forefront of the novels, relegating the true historical characters of the period to provide an intriguing backdrop.Continue reading “Kingdom Come (Kingmaker #4) by Toby Clements: Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
Book and audiobook update
Hey guys, It’s been a while since I’ve waffled on about my current projects, so here’s a wee update on what I’ve been up to. The Fractured Peace audiobook is in its final stages. I finished listening to it yesterday and I’m delighted how it’s turned out. It’s narrated by the very talented Jared CramContinue reading “Book and audiobook update”
Long overdue update
Hey guys, It’s been a while since I’ve blogged anything. And in truth, it’s because I’ve been fully immersed in several of my current projects. I try to post updates as often as I can but feel that any spare time I have is often taken up attempting to complete content rather than the ravingsContinue reading “Long overdue update”
Blog – Update Under Lockdown
Hey guys, It’s been a few weeks since I last blogged. The honest reason behind this is that I’ve been up to pretty much the same as everyone else during this difficult time (well, nearly — I haven’t taken any long-haul drives to Durham… 😳). I’m sure you will all agree, it’s hard not beingContinue reading “Blog – Update Under Lockdown”
Scourge Sequel
With the end of The Fractured Peace in sight, I thought I’d get started on the sequel to Scourge of the Vector. Originally intended as a stand-alone sci-fi short story, the potential to extend my fictional universe was far too tempting to pass up. Therefore, the series has been aptly titled: Hostile Universe. The firstContinue reading “Scourge Sequel”
